Racquets Juniors Feature Heavily in Oxfordshire County Team!
This weekend various clubs in Surrey hosted
the Junior Inter-County Championships where counties from the North and South
of England all battled it out to try and progress through to finals weekend, to
gain the title of County Champions. We are particularly pleased here at
Racquets to see so many of our juniors competing in the County Team, showing
the strength and depth now on offer in our Junior Squash Academy. Out of the 13
players selected to represent the county, more than half were players from
Thame.
The youngest to compete were Anthony, Alex,
Adam and Myles who made up the majority of the U13 boys team, Myles still an
U11 player and the others only recently moving into the age group. The young
team showed fantastic team spirit across the weekend, coaching and supporting
each other between games. They overcame Essex and Bucks to secure 2nd
place in the group, only losing to a very strong Kent team.
In the U15 boy’s category Silas and Chris
made their debut appearance for the County, narrowly missing out in the team
last year. After lots of hard work and training both players earned their place
in the squad and both proved an asset for the team! Silas completed a ‘trio of
Glovers’ with his two younger siblings playing in the U13 event. Chris proved
to be the hero of the day claiming a win over Middlesex with all other matches
being extremely close.
Racquets most experienced junior player,
Ollie Cartwright, competed in an older age group at the ICC playing in the U19
team at the age of 15. Through grit and determination Ollie won his match
against Essex, gaining the only win the for the team. They lost out to a strong
Bucks team but all enjoyed the experience.
