Leo shows promise in tournament after long break
Racquets Fitness Centre in Thame ran a one-day junior squash tournament on 5th December 2015 as a demonstration for Small Business Saturday. 17 juniors competed with spirit but good humour and 2 of our academy juniors ran the tournament.
Academy coach Sue Martin-Downhill said ‘what great experience for Oliver Cartwright and Nick Baker to take on the organisation of getting players on court each with a referee and ensuring that all the results are recorded. This is part of the academy that we run here – to give the kids opportunities which will set them in good stead for future whether in sport or work.’
In the beginners grade Kaitlyn Crawford had great games particularly with Joey Monti. Kaitlyn won the 5 set match 3-2 against Joey to take the beginners grade.
In the next grade up Leo Hayden came back from a long break from squash to win against players playing and training regularly.
James Portsmouth and Evan Littler endured a gruelling 5 set match with just a small amount too much of competitiveness. Evan ran out the winner in this tournament taking the title of the grade with it.
In the top grade training partners Nick Baker and Ollie Dudley-Heidkamp fought hard against each other in yet another 5 set match. Nick was the victor this time but as with all the 5 set matches in this tournament in the end they could have gone either way.
The tournament was played in the greatest of spirit and I’m sure that the players will have taken away extra enthusiasm to train for the next one.
